The New England Patriots could welcome back a familiar face.
Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers has requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, and Zach Bachar of Bleacher Report named New England as a logical landing spot for the veteran.
“Meyers could return to the team that he opened his career with. The wideout spent his first four NFL seasons with the New England Patriots from 2019-22, recording 235 catches for 2,758 yards and eight scores over that span. Meyers eventually left to join the Raiders as a free agent in March 2023, but a reunion with New England is a possibility. The Patriots could also use a consistent weapon for quarterback Drake Maye as he prepares for his second year in the NFL. If Las Vegas seriously pursues trades for Meyers, New England could be a suitor,” Bachar wrote.
This makes sense on multiple levels.
For starters, Meyers joined the Raiders when Josh McDaniels was their head coach.
Now, with McDaniels back as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, reuniting with Meyers would be a seamless fit, as he’s familiar with the offense.
Meyers can become a free agent at the end of the season, and he’s been trying to get a new deal from the Raiders for months.
The Patriots added plenty of firepower at wide receivers this offseason.
They signed Stefon Diggs, who’s penciled in as their primary pass catcher.
Rookie Kyle Williams and slot specialist DeMario Douglas are expected to be the other starters, with Kayshon Boutte and undrafted free agent Efton Chism III behind them.
So, while it’s not like they need to bring back Meyers, he would be a boost for a team that’s trying to return to relevance.
Whether they’ll be able to pull it off remains to be seen, but it shouldn’t take much to get him on board.
