The New England Patriots don’t seem to have a clear direction right now.
Other than Drake Maye, it seems like there’s no plan for the future.
There have been conflicting reports about Jerod Mayo and whether he’s going to be there for the long run or even make it past this offseason.
The team has struggled to get and keep talent for quite a while, and while a lot of that falls on Bill Belichick’s shoulders, this new regime didn’t do much to change that in the offseason.
Even so, if there’s a silver lining, it might be that they haven’t been desperate for an aging quarterback.
At least, that’s how Doug Kyed feels.
Say what you will about the current and previous Patriots front offices, but at least they haven't paid top dollar to acquire a veteran starting quarterback in the last five years.
It's been almost nothing but disaster since Matthew Stafford: Cousins and the Falcons, Watson and…

The renowned Patriots beat writer took to X to claim that at least the Patriots haven’t spent top dollar on an aging quarterback, as that hasn’t worked out at all for any team since the Los Angeles Rams traded for Matthew Stafford.
He cited the situation with Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos, Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns, and now Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons.
Only Cam Newton made his way to Foxborough as a veteran quarterback, and he didn’t get that much money or even time.
The Patriots have struggled mightily to find their next quarterback since Tom Brady left, and there’s no such thing as replacing a Hall of Famer.
For now, it seems like Maye might be that guy, but he’s still a project.
