Back in 2017, the Kansas City Chiefs made a trade that would change the course of franchise history for good.
They traded their first and third-round pick that year and their first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to get the Buffalo Bills’ 10th overall pick, which they later used to select Patrick Lavon Mahomes II.
Originally projected to be a second-round pick, the Texas Tech product wowed scouts and executives alike during his pro day and the NFL Draft combine.
The Chiefs knew they got their guy, taking a QB in the first round for the first time since they drafted Todd Blackledge back in 2083.
But not even the most optimistic scout ever thought Mahomes was going to be that good that fast, and he’s exceeded all expectations thus far.
With his Super Bowl win and Super Bowl MVP honors last night, Mahomes has joined a legendary group of quarterbacks as the only players with at least 2 MVPs and 2 Super Bowl MVPs: Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Peyton Manning.

All of the aforementioned — minus Brady, who’ll be eligible in 2028 — are inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and there’s no doubt that Pat will someday wear a golden jacket as well.
Mahomes has dominated the league right out of the gate like arguably no other quarterback, and he’s putting together one of the most impressive and accomplished résumés this sport has ever seen.
So, props to the front office for giving up so much to get him.
In hindsight, the Bills could’ve asked them for a little more.
