The Green Bay Packers don’t traditionally make big splashes at the trade deadline, and while fans were hoping for a big move to help either side of the ball, they decided to continue with their current roster.
This team is coming off a frustrating and surprising loss to the Carolina Panthers, a team that many believed they’d beat by two touchdowns.
While they could use some help on defense and on their offensive line, in particular, the Packers believe they didn’t need to make a move to go on a deep postseason run.
They aren’t, however, closing the door to signing a player in the next several weeks.
The Packers are meeting with Asante Samuel Jr., a cornerback with plenty of NFL experience who could help their defensive back room take the next step.
As analyst Eli Berkovits noted on X, “It would be organizational malpractice to allow Asanta Samuel Jr. to leave Green Bay without a contract.”

Berkovits shared a video clip on X of Samuel making many highlight plays, whether through interceptions or pass breakups.
The Packers could certainly use a veteran at this position, and while Samuel hasn’t necessarily been himself lately, he would still be an upgrade in his current state.
Depth is crucial in the second half of the NFL season, and acquiring a player like Samuel would not only help their depth but also give them higher-end talent that teams are craving.
Samuel is visiting with other teams as well, but if he isn’t signed by the time the Packers get him in the building, they should throw the kitchen sink at him, at least in Berkovits’ eyes.
