The Green Bay Packers have been known for strong offenses and defenses throughout the years. Some of those years have gone hand-in-hand, while other years have seen one unit be better than the other. However, one consistent thing, especially in recent seasons, has been poor special teams play.
They’ve had some kicker woes, and while their punting situation has been better lately, special teams as a whole have been a constant and consistent struggle. One of the worst parts, especially this year, is their punt returners.
As analyst Daire Carragher noted on X, of the 45 players that have returned three or more punts this season, the Packers have the bottom three players in terms of yards per attempt. With that in mind, fellow analyst Wendell Ferreira responded to Carragher’s post, indicating that the Packers should sign Ihmir Smith-Marsette from the New York Giants’ practice squad.
I'm begging the Packers to sign Ihmir Smith-Marsette off the Giants' PS. https://t.co/Tiy3mt6z1d

Smith-Marsette hasn’t been able to carve out a full-time role on any team throughout his career, but he’s shown a great ability to return punts. It might be worth it for the Packers to pursue a player like this, who can hopefully help them with a unit that has struggled for years.
Having strength at all three levels is something that teams strive for, especially heading into the postseason. If the Packers want to have any chance at a deep playoff run, they’ll have to make some drastic changes to keep up with the top teams in the league.
