For years, the Green Bay Packers had either the best or one of the best quarterbacks in the game in Aaron Rodgers.
Regardless of his supporting cast, which was great at times and not so much at others, Rodgers always found the way to keep the chains in motion, make the most of the weapons at his disposal, and lead the team to the playoffs.
Then, time and time again, the defense bailed on the offense.
Fast forward to today, and that has always been the case in the early stages of the Jordan Love era.
That was until Jeff Hafley took over.
That’s why it’s not much of a surprise to hear that the former Boston College head coach could get a chance to run his own team pretty soon.
According to a report by Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Packers’ defensive coordinator will be a hot commodity in this year’s coach hiring cycle:
“Here are some other names I’ll be keeping my eye on if and when other openings arise: Packers DC Jeff Hafley,” Russini wrote.
Hafley has turned the Packers’ defense around, almost overnight.
Joe Barry failed to make the most of a very talented defensive unit, but the Packers’ new scheme and more aggressive style have finally helped them be at their best.
Of course, losing Hafley would be a huge blow to Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff, and they would have to get back to the drawing board to find a suitable replacement.
Then again, that’s usually what happens in this line of business: Having a great assistant coach is both a curse and a blessing.
