For years, Odell Beckham Jr. was one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.
His speed, athleticism, route running and reliable hands made him a big-play threat.
Unfortunately, his prime was short, and he’s struggled to stay healthy.
That’s why, as he remained unsigned, some people thought he was done with football.
He was even tangled up in retirement rumors after a fake account made the announcement on social media.
That’s why he’s had to make it loud and clear that he’s not done playing at all.
If anything, he believes that he can still be a factor for a team.
“I got some things in the work. Retiring is not happening. I just came from the gym. This is the first time in a long time I can, like, pop up out of bed or if a dog was about to chase me I could take off running. I’m good. And I know I could play in the league right now. I’m not looking to be someone’s No. 1 wide receiver and get 15 targets. Like, bro I know the game. I get how it goes. … I just be wanting to play ball on a good team where I have a role, where I got five, six, seven plays where I get the chance to catch. … I just want to play ball, finish off my legacy for myself,” Beckham said.
Of course, he wouldn’t be the first pro athlete and former star who has a tough time dealing with the fact that he’s not the player he used to be anymore.
Though he admits that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a WR1 at this point in his career, recent history isn’t on his side for a lesser role, either.
He’s failed to make an impact at his last two stops, with the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins, and it feels like the league has given up on him.
It’s a shame to see a talented player’s prime go to waste because of injuries.
But even though that was the case, Beckham had a good run.
