Quarterback Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals have finally agreed to terms on a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension.

The $46.1 million annual average value makes him one of the highest-paid players in the league.

However, the deal will officially start in 2024 because he will play the final year of his rookie contract this season and his $29.7 million fifth-year option in 2023.

Still, Murray’s camp finally got what they wanted after threatening to not play without an extension in place.

The negotiations for Murray’s extension started on a tumultuous note when Murray and his agent, Erik Burkhardt, released a lengthy post on why the 2019 top overall pick deserved a new contract after his third NFL season.

Initially, the Cardinals didn’t feel threatened because they have Murray under contract for two more seasons.

In their timeline, they would like the negotiations to happen next season.

But Murray and Burkhardt won after by getting what they wanted and when they wanted it.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero revealed that the Cardinals will pay him $30 million in the first year, $69 million over two years, and $106.15 million over three years.

The enormity of the contract had this Twitter user comment about Murray potentially choosing baseball.

Likewise, the contract will only be worth it if Murray does this.

Apprehensions About Murray’s Contract Extension

While Cardinals fans celebrate the deal, more football fans have questions regarding Murray’s game.

Kyler Murray is a stud…but the questions I have about him are not about his talent….it’s between the ears that I worry about

— Michael Pevia (@MichaelPeviaTBS) July 21, 2022

Aside from his football IQ, this Twitter user brought out the numbers to argue against Murray’s contract extension.

Kyler Murray is 23-22-1 as a starter never threw for 4k in a season. Never won a playoff game. Every season double digit ints. And he Just got 46 Million a year. I’m literally in disbelief lol I respect his game but wow.

— Lord Brunson tweets (@lord_brunson) July 21, 2022

Likewise, Murray received his contract extension after his third year which is the same timeline that Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen had.

Because of that comparison, this football fan puts things into perspective.

Kyler Murray is at the very bottom of my list for young QBs I’d want to lead my franchise.

— Jacob Lavers (@JacobLavers2) July 21, 2022

Finally, this fan pointed out that the Baltimore Ravens are sweating profusely right now because Murray’s deal will have a direct effect to Lamar Jackson‘s impending contract extension.

If Kyler Murray got a bag like that, I’m tryna see what Lamar finna get 👀🔋

After all, Jackson deserves more given that he has been a league MVP.
