The Las Vegas Raiders will enter the 2023 season with a new starting quarterback.
In the past several weeks, many rumors have surfaced about Derek Carr and his future status with the team.
This morning, an announcement was made that was a long time coming.

The above is Carr’s statement, not only to the Raiders but to the entire league as well.
As is the case whenever a major announcement is made, many NFL fans have posted their initial reactions to Carr’s decision, and the potential ramifications of him moving on to a different organization.
One tweet in particular by ESPN’s Field Yates takes an inside look at what a team would be walking into, should they decide to sign Carr.
If a team were to trade for Derek Carr, here is what it would owe him on his current deal:
2023: $32.9M base salary + $100K workout bonus = $33M cap hit
2024: $41.9M base salary + $100K workout bonus = $42M cap hit
2025: $41.2M base salary + $100K workout bonus = $41.3M cap hit— Field Yates (@FieldYates) January 12, 2023
Over the next three seasons, if traded, Carr would be owed a total of $116 million, a cap hit that not many teams are willing to take on.
If a team does trade for Carr and take on this contract, they would make a statement that Carr will be their long-term answer, and is the missing piece that they need to make a postseason run.
Regardless of what you think of him, Derek Carr's postseason resume can't be denied:
159th all-time in completions
163rd all-time in attempts
169th all-time in passing yards
178th all-time in passing touchdowns— Barry (@BarryOnHere) January 12, 2023
The above, although intended to be humorous, demonstrates Carr’s poor track record in the playoffs.
In Carr’s tenure with the team, the Raiders have only made the playoffs twice, with Carr’s only postseason start coming in the 2021 season when the Raiders lost to the Cincinnati Bengals.
In this game, Carr did throw for 310 yards, but only had one touchdown and added in an interception, finishing the game with a passer rating of 69.2.
