The Seattle Seahawks quarterback situation has been a constant topic of discussion this season, with Geno Smith’s future in Seattle hanging in the balance.
Despite signing a three-year, $75 million extension in March 2023 that runs through 2025, Smith’s contract structure leaves room for uncertainty.
NFL insider Albert Breer reveals that while the Seahawks aim to keep Smith, they’re simultaneously exploring long-term quarterback solutions.
While the Seahawks value Smith’s contributions and character, his inconsistent performance hasn’t gone unnoticed.
The coaching staff acknowledges their role, particularly in areas like run game support and play-action schemes, where they believe they could have provided better support.
“I’m told that Geno will be looking for a commitment from the organization this off-season. Meanwhile, I’d also expect the Seahawks to continue to look at their future. That’s what they’ve always done at the position, even when Russell Wilson was entrenched as a starter and still in his 20s. They did a deep dive into Patrick Mahomes in ’17, deep dive into Josh Allen in ’18,” Breer explained.

The evolving quarterback market adds another layer to Smith’s situation.
With nine quarterbacks now commanding annual salaries exceeding $50 million, Smith seeks a firm commitment from Seattle this offseason.
The financial implications grow more significant in 2025, when Smith’s salary cap hit increases from $26.4 million to $38.5 million.
This leaves Seattle facing a critical decision this offseason: restructure Smith’s deal with an extension or move in a different direction.
