The New England Patriots surprised fans when they parted ways with Bill Belichick in the offseason.
Belichick is one of the most decorated coaches in league history, a legend within the Patriots organization.
However, the team started struggling when Tom Brady left, and after a few years of frustration, it was seemingly time for Belichick to move on.
The Patriots had a replacement picked out in former player Jerod Mayo, a beloved figure from his playing days with the team.
Mayo might have been a fantastic player, but his first year as a coach has left something to be desired.
The Patriots have one of the worst records in the league at 3-11 and are coming off a blowout loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Fans made sure to let Mayo have it on social media after this game, talking negatively about his first year as a signal-caller.
Jerod Mayo may have surpassed Nathaniel Hackett as worst first year coaching job ever

Jerod Mayo is totally in over his head. But Bob Kraft hired him 5 years ago and didn’t even think to interview anyone else. This coaching staff is an embarrassment pic.twitter.com/qcxdajx6Pm

The Kraft family will bring back Jerod Mayo and his staff because they do not want to admit a mistake.
Coaching matters so much in the NFL so the Patriots will waste at least two seasons of Drake Maye’s rookie contract.
When are fans going to point fingers at the owners?

Give me a good reason why Jerod Mayo should return as Head Coach or Eliot Wolf as GM.

Fans are already calling for his head, which doesn’t bode well for a long-term stay for Mayo in New England.
However, as Ross Goldman called out on X, The Kraft family might not want to take accountability for hiring Mayo, who hasn’t worked out thus far, and could retain him for at least one more year, hoping he can turn things around.
It is Drake Maye’s rookie year, which was bound to have some ups and downs, but if the team doesn’t turn things around in 2025, there will be a lot of questions about his future as a starting QB and about Mayo’s status as a head coach.
