The New York Yankees have been buoyed this season by the contributions of Nestor Cortes, who has been the team’s ace.
Amidst all their injuries and struggles, the Yankees have found that they can count on Cortes when they need him most.
Unfortunately, that won’t be the case for a little while.
Cortes is headed to the injured list as a result of a groin injury.
Right-hander Greg Weissert will be called up from Triple-A to take his spot and will join the team in Oakland this weekend.
The 27-year-old left-hander is 9-4 with a 2.68 ERA in 23 starts this season and has thrown a total of 131 innings.

Cortes Lands On IL
This is bad news for the Yankees, who continue to struggle with injuries.
While the Yankees have plenty of depth, Cortes has been the guy that the Yankees have been able to count on in key situations this season.
Without him, the rotation is down to Gerrit Cole, Frankie Montas, Jameson Taillon, and Domingo German.
The Yankees open up a four-game weekend series with the Oakland Athletics.
They remain atop the American League East by 7.5 games over the surging Toronto Blue Jays, but without Cortes, they’ll need to plug a hole for the time being.
Who will plug that hole ultimately is unknown at this moment.
Any time without Cortes is a huge blow, but the Yankees will need him back soon if they want to make some noise in the postseason.
Holding off the surging Blue Jays just got a little bit harder.
We’ll see what the Yankees ultimately decide to do without Cortes and how they’ll fare with him on the injured list for the time being.
