Kevin Love is officially a member of the Utah Jazz, but everyone knows he probably won’t be there for long.
When Love traveled from the Miami Heat to the Jazz, it was assumed that he’d be a prime candidate for a buyout in the offseason.
That would allow him to move to another team, preferably a contending one, because his time in the league is drawing to an end.
According to Marc Stein, there hasn’t been much progress between Love and the Jazz.
“The Jazz and Kevin Love, I’m told, have not yet moved into serious buyout discussions despite reports to the contrary,” Stein wrote. “It is widely known in league circles that Love is determined to play for a playoff contender at this point in his career, but it is also customary for a buyout process to progress to an advanced stage once a post-buyout landing spot is assured.”
If Love had a new team lined up for his next steps, the buyout process would be moving along.
But since there isn’t a squad ready to take him, he remains with the Jazz, at least for now.
Love is 37 years old, which means he is getting closer to retirement and wants to spend this remaining time with a team that will provide him the best chance of taking home another title.
He knows he won’t be getting a ton of minutes, and he’s okay with that, but he wants it with a team that fits him and has lots of postseason potential.
That obviously limits his options, which could hurt Love’s chances of a new contract.
He needs to keep looking for a front office willing to sign him, because training camp is getting closer and his contract is still firmly planted in Utah.
