The New Orleans Pelicans have flirted with contention quite often over the past couple of years.
But they just can’t seem to keep their foot on the gas, mostly because of injuries.
Notably, that has been the case with Zion Williamson for the better part of his career.
Not only is he hurt often, but he also takes way more time than the average player to heal, even if it’s just minor ailments.
The franchise has always been extremely cautious with their former first-overall pick, and rightfully so.
But that has also kept him off the floor more often than not, and this season won’t be the exception to that rule.
There was some growing optimism that Zion would be on the floor if the Pelicans made it to the play-in tournament.
However, The Athletic’s Shams Charania just reported that that’s not going to happen, as the team continues to take a precautionary approach with their injury-prone star.
Pelicans star Zion Williamson – sidelined since Jan. 2 with a hamstring strain – is unlikely to return to action in next week's Play-In Tournament, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. The team has been cautious with Williamson's comeback as he continues rehab process.

Zion has been sidelined since January 2 with a hamstring strain, and the chances of watching him suit up again this season are quite slim.
He’s an impactful player who can dominate with his physicality every time he’s on the floor, but he’s become a rare sight on the NBA hardwood.
At this point, it doesn’t seem like Zion will ever be healthy, and he’s the kind of player no team or fan could depend on, and that’s not even his fault.
Hopefully, we’re wrong and he’ll be able to shake those injury woes off one day, although it doesn’t seem likely.
