A lot of things went wrong for the Los Angeles Lakers this season.
In fact, very few things went right for the team – who are officially out of playoff contention and started their extra-long summer break early.
Many of the problems revolved around how the squad played together – especially with newcomer Russell Westbrook.
Head coach Frank Vogel has consistently been blamed for many of the team’s woes, whether he deserves to be or not.
And now his time with the team has come to an end, as it’s expected he will be fired on Monday.
The Lakers:
– Refused to give Frank Vogel more than a three-year deal
– Only extended him for one year, and did so a full year after he won a championship
– Leaked that he almost got fired midseason
– Leaked that he actually did get fired literal seconds after the season ended— Sam Quinn (@SamQuinnCBS) April 11, 2022
However, Vogel has been kicked around by the Lakers for far too long, according to NBA writer Sam Quinn.
Quinn pointed out that the Lakers refused to give him a three-year contract, then only extended his deal after he won a championship.
Furthermore, the front office leaked news of Vogel’s possible firing halfway through the season this year and then announced his actual firing just seconds after the team’s last game.
Did Vogel deserve any of this?
Scapegoat?
The issues with the Lakers go far beyond Vogel’s coaching.
There is no denying the fact that Westbrook just doesn’t fit in this Lakers lineup.
Some have argued that even the best coach in the league wouldn’t have been able to fix the problems plaguing LA.
The fear is that Los Angeles feels that simply firing Vogel will be enough to correct things.
Fans are terrified that LA won’t do anything else but get rid of Vogel.
If that happens, there is a good chance that next season could be just as bad as this one.
The Lakers never really treated Vogel well and he handled it with class.
It’s now time to see if they are able to find a new coach they can work with – and treat right.
