The Washington Nationals are a team no one expects to compete anytime soon.
Once they traded Juan Soto in 2022, it was clear they were entering a long rebuild.
They did make significant improvements from 2022 to 2023.
The Nationals went from 55 wins to 71 and have some good young players to show for it.
Competing for an NL East title or even a playoff spot may not be that far off.
Even with a roster they are hoping to develop, the Nationals still are looking to bring in some veterans.
They did just that by signing outfielder Joey Gallo.
According to Mark Feinsand via MLB on Twitter, Gallo agreed to a one-year contract with Washington.

Last season, Gallo played 111 games with the Minnesota Twins.
He did what he has done best his entire career: hit home runs.
In 282 at-bats, Gallo hit 21 home runs and drove in 40.
But, his batting average was only .177.
Gallo has always struggled to hit for a high average.
He has a ton of swing-and-miss in his game.
But, his ability to hit for power is what makes him valuable.
Gallo also has become a Gold Glove-level defender.
He has won two Gold Gloves in his career and is most known for his arm strength.
Gallo will not take the Nationals over the top, but he can be a solid contributor.
It will be interesting to see what the Nationals look like next season.
A successful season for them would be increasing their win total from 71.
Gallo has a chance to play a role in their success.
