Spring training is officially underway.
Not only are we preparing for another exciting season of Major League Baseball, but we’re going to see a somewhat different game in 2023.
Some new rules have been put in place to help meet fan requests and expectations for a more fun style of play.
A pitch clock will be implemented to help speed the game up, the shift is now restricted to allow for more hits and more offensive action, and bigger bases are being used to ensure the safety of players running the bases.
On Twitter, MLB provided an update on the new rules and where things stand as of now.
As #SpringTraining gets into full swing this week, let’s revisit the new on-field rules beginning this season.

As stated in the graphic, larger bases were used in the minor leagues last season and it helped reduce injuries among minor league players.
The bases will go from 15 to 18 inches in width.
With the new restrictions on the shift, there must be two infielders on either side of second base at all times, which means the days of seeing four infielders on one side, or potentially even an outfielder playing closer to the infield, are over.
This is something that MLB hopes will allow for more hits and more runs to be scored.
The pitch clock is something that MLB hopes will speed the game up a bit.
With no runners on base, pitchers will have 15 seconds to deliver their pitches.
With runners on base, the time goes up to 20 seconds.
Any violation of the rule will result in an automatic ball for pitchers and an automatic strike for batters.
