The New York Mets’ decision to trade closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins is a clear sign of the organization’s intentions and approach at the deadline next week.
They won’t be active sellers, but they won’t acquire MLB-ready talent to aid a postseason push.
At this point, there will probably not be a playoff push to speak of given their 48-54 record.
Instead, what they will probably do is listen to trade inquiries for some of their veterans.
They won’t trade the core of their roster, but if someone comes calling for, say, Mark Canha or Max Scherzer (guys on short-term contracts) they will listen.
That’s what they did with Robertson, an effective reliever with a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings this season.
The Marlins called and offered two rock-solid prospects, so the Mets took advantage.
There is still a sour taste in fans’ mouths about what could have been, though.
MLB insider Jeff Passan did his best to explain it.
“The story of the 2023 New York Mets is one of true disappointment. Injuries, regression and now, at the deadline, when they wanted to add to a championship-caliber team, retreat. David Robertson moves up in the NL East standings to the Marlins. What a weird sentence to write,” he tweeted.

Yes, it’s definitely a weird sentence: associating the Mets with selling isn’t something we expected prior to the season.
These things can happen, though: the Mets have endured injuries, suspensions, slumps, and other bumps in the road.
It’s time to start thinking about 2024 and beyond.
After spending millions in re-signing Brandon Nimmo and Edwin Diaz plus bringing in Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana and others, it’s certainly shocking.
