Brad Ausmus has dedicated a big portion of his life to baseball.
He played in high school and college, then had a long, fruitful career as an MLB catcher.
Then, he was a manager between 2014 and 2017 and then in 2019; and, in 2022, he was a bench coach for the Oakland Athletics.
As it turns out, he is a candidate to fill yet another role in MLB: general manager.
He is one of the options that the Houston Astros (with which he played between 1997-1998 and 2001-2008) are considering to replace the departed James Click.
“Brad Ausmus is among the remaining candidates to become the next #Astros general manager, as @OrtizKicks reported earlier today. Ausmus, the @dartmouth alum, was viewed as a potential @MLB GM before becoming the manager in Detroit 9 years ago,” MLB insider Jon Morosi tweeted.

As many former catchers do, Ausmus made the jump from player to manager.
It’s not common, however, to encounter people who played, managed, and served as the general manager for an MLB team.
If he is hired, that would be a very cool achievement for a man who clearly knows his baseball.
The Astros are not going to consider a GM candidate that doesn’t know analytics and isn’t good at spotting and evaluating talent, so the sole fact Ausmus is an option should be a compliment.
The Astros parted ways with Click several weeks ago and have been able to enjoy a relatively normal offseason, with additions and subtractions like every other team.
They do need some stability and leadership at the position, and Ausmus could offer both.
Stay tuned.
