The New York Yankees, to the surprise of many, find themselves in the basement of the ever-competitive American League East division.
The team sits at 21-18 and nine games out of first place, which is currently occupied by the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays.
While the Yankees will more than likely figure out a way to turn things around, it is worth wondering what path they may take at the trade deadline.
It’s always possible that they could end up selling if they don’t gain any ground in the AL East.
A recent report by Buster Olney of ESPN, via Fireside Yankees, suggests that the Yankees may end up doing just that.
Olney notes that the team has several bullpen pieces to offer, but that starter Luis Severino could also fall into that category.

Severino is currently on a rehab assignment.
The 29-year-old is recovering from a right lat strain that he suffered during spring training.
Severino has certainly dealt with more than his fair share of injuries over the course of his career.
But if he comes back and remains healthy, he could be a valuable asset for any teams that are looking to add starting pitching when the trade deadline arrives.
The Houston Astros are currently without both Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr.
Perhaps they could take a flyer on Severino.
Severino went 7-3 last season in 19 starts and posted an ERA of 3.18.
His 2019 and 2021 seasons were shortened because of injuries, and the right-hander also missed the entire pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
Ultimately, it depends on what happens for the Yankees and if they can bounce back into contention in the AL East.
