The New York Yankees dropped another game against the top team in the AL East, the Baltimore Orioles, on Sunday and are now 55-50, nine games behind them and 3.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros for the third and last Wild Card spot.
New York has been wildly inconsistent in recent games, with a 5-5 record over their last 10.
They have gotten Aaron Judge back, but many of the problems that have affected the team the whole season are still there: a lack of consistency on offense, a couple of struggling pitchers in the rotation, no production at third base, and a lack of depth in the outfield.
Being so close to a postseason spot, the Yanks are expected to be buyers at the deadline but that isn’t set in stone.
The market, however, presents a lot of difficulties for them according to MLB insider Jon Heyman.
“Yankees never had a conversation with Rockies about Randal Grichuk, who went back to the Angels. NYY is looking at LF, 3B and C in very weak position player market,” he tweeted.

Grichuk, who is hitting .308/.365/.496 in 64 games this season, would have been a nice addition but the Angels acquired him.
The real problems for the Yankees are catcher and third base.
Jose Trevino and Josh Donaldson, the starters there, suffered season-ending injuries and they weren’t very productive to begin with.
Their replacements have failed to provide consistent offensive production, so the Yankees are forced to go acquire some talent in a sellers market if they want to have a chance.
There are just not too many squads that are clear sellers.
The Yankees could be in for a rough deadline.
