At this point, all hope appears to be lost for the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team entered Saturday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees with a record of 33-47, sitting 10 games back of first place.
All of the progress that was made in May has been lost.
And so, with the trade deadline approaching, it appears very likely that the team will look to sell off some pieces, especially players on expiring contracts.
On Friday, MLB Network insider and St. Louis native Greg Amsinger commented on what the trade deadline could potentially look like for St. Louis and how they can ultimately prepare for 2024.
How can the #stlcards set themselves up for a turnaround in 2024?
Greg Amsinger joined #TheOpeningDrive to get into how STL can at least win at the deadline & free agency to prepare for next season.

Amsinger noted that now is a good time for the Cards to reset and capitalize on their impending free agents, while also noting that there will be several free agent starters they can choose from this upcoming winter.
Amsinger predicted that St. Louis will trade Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery, both of whom are on expiring contracts.
He predicted that Flaherty could benefit from a homecoming if he were traded to the Los Angeles Angels and that he would give them a No. 2 starter to go next to Shohei Ohtani.
He also pointed out that Tommy Edman could be a trade piece that teams may have interested and noted that the Texas Rangers are a team that could use somebody like him who can play all over the diamond.
Amsinger believes that if the Cardinals capitalize on this opportunity to get some prospects back and possibly even some pieces for next year, they could still have a shot to win the NL Central in 2024.
