The San Diego Padres made sure to lock up right-hander Yu Darvish on Thursday, signing the veteran to a six-year, $108 million contract extension which will keep him in a Padres uniform through at least the 2028 season.
The 36-year-old had a tough first year in a Padres uniform in 2021, but he bounced back in 2022, winning 16 games and posting an ERA of 3.10 in 30 starts and 194.2 innings of work.
He’s a key piece of a Padres rotation that already includes Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove.
On Twitter, Jon Heyman of MLB Network revealed some more details of the right-hander’s new deal with the team and what it means going forward.

In total, Darvish will make $108 million over the six years of his deal.
He’ll start off with a $24 million payment in the first year of the deal.
He’ll make $15 million in 2024, $20 million in 2025, $15 million again in 2026, and $14 million in the final two years of the deal.
According to Heyman, Darvish will also receive a signing bonus of $6 million, as well as a full no-trade clause and an interpreter.
His base salary for 2028 will increase for every Cy Young Award he wins from 2023-27, assuming he wins a Cy Young in that period of time.
The veteran right-hander made his MLB debut in 2012 with the Texas Rangers and made brief stops with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs.
Over his 11-year career, he has earned five All-Star nods.
If he plays out the remainder of his contract, he will have spent more time with the Padres than with any other organization, having spent parts of seven seasons in Texas and three in Chicago.
