Entering the 2023 season, the New York Mets were expected to be a clear postseason contender.
They had signed Justin Verlander, Brandon Nimmo, Kodai Senga, and Jose Quintana.
However, the team fell on hard times and ultimately reversed course at the trade deadline.
Verlander and Max Scherzer have both been traded away and now the team is looking at a rebuild that will last until 2026.
On Friday, the Mets were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles 10-3 following a sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals.
On Twitter, Bob Nightengale noted how the fire sale at the trade deadline appears to have sucked the life out of the team and made them unrecognizable.

With Friday night’s loss, New York fell to 50-59 on the season.
They still are alive in the Wild Card race, as they sit 7.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds, who hold the third and final spot at the moment.
However, the season continues to go south for New York.
They have a run differential of -29 and continue to slip in the standings.
This is quite a contrast from the 2022 season and what was expected out of the Mets this season.
Last year, New York won 101 games and secured the top Wild Card spot in the National League.
They were ultimately defeated by the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card Series, but appeared to be set up well for the future.
However, that has changed, and it appears that it’s going to be a while before the Mets return to contention.
