The Dallas Cowboys recently shocked the football world by trading for Trey Lance.
Lance has only been in the league for two seasons, apparently enough time for the San Francisco 49ers to move on from him.
The 49ers famously traded three first-round draft picks to move up for Lance, but unfortunate circumstances have let him go elsewhere.
His trade to the Cowboys confused several pundits across the league, considering the Cowboys have Dak Prescott under contract.
After this trade was finalized, head coach Mike McCarthy provided insight into the deal.
McCarthy spoke highly of Lance, saying, “The athletic ability was definitely something that jumped off here,” per Pro Football Talk.

Lance’s prospect profile was widely debated across the league when he entered the NFL Draft.
As McCarthy indicated, the Cowboys had a second-round grade on Lance, a steep decline from where the 49ers took him.
He does believe Lance has talent, which the Cowboys hope they can develop under Prescott.
There are plenty of examples of quarterbacks who struggle on one team only to find their way back on the playing field after mentorship and further training.
Can Lance’s career turn out to be a success story?
While the Cowboys haven’t made a deep playoff run for several years, the organization is highly regarded.
The Cowboys have churned out several elite NFL athletes, helping them grow into the players they wanted to be when they entered the league.
Under Prescott and McCarthy’s leadership, Lance has an opportunity to grow and develop, learning what it means to be a starting quarterback.
