The Atlanta Falcons dropped their fourth straight game on Sunday with a 31-25 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts. Michael Penix Jr. struggled with accuracy throughout the afternoon, completing just 12 of 28 passes for a 42.9 percent completion rate.
The quarterback also lost a fumble while the offense failed to convert any of its eight third-down opportunities. Penix was selected eighth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft as the fourth quarterback taken in the first round.
His recent performances have raised questions about his development relative to that draft position. During a media session this week, the young quarterback addressed his current trajectory and mindset moving forward.
“I’ve gotta be at my best for the team and it’s going to come. Every week, I feel like I’m getting better,” Penix said, per ESPN’s Marc Raimondi.

The loss brought immediate scrutiny toward Penix from fans and analysts across the league. His mechanics appeared inconsistent under pressure, while his accuracy remained an issue throughout the contest.
Those struggles have been a recurring theme through his first 11 starts at the professional level. Penix ranks 41st in completion percentage and 42nd in off-target rate among 43 qualified quarterbacks since the beginning of 2024.
Those numbers highlight the challenges he continues to face in his transition from college football. Head coach Raheem Morris declined to place blame solely on his quarterback when discussing the completion percentage after Sunday’s loss. Morris noted that Penix holds himself accountable regardless of the circumstances or who may be responsible for mistakes.
The coach also acknowledged that the team must improve in several areas to provide better support for their rookie signal-caller. The Falcons’ assessment of Penix centers on growth and maturity rather than immediate results as the quarterback continues developing his approach to the position.
