With a heavy investment in free agents in each of the last two offseasons, the 2023 New York Mets were built to compete for the World Series.
Whether that building process was good remains a topic for another day, but the fact is that this is a team with championship aspirations from the go.
However, the Mets find themselves in a tough spot at the moment because they are fourth in the NL East with a mediocre 44-50 record.
Lots of things have gone wrong for them, from injuries to extended slumps to overall inconsistency.
Now, they are at a crossroads: should they be buyers and try to revert the situation?
Or should they sell some veterans and retool for next year?
Mets insider Andy Martino revealed some potential clues.
“Mets pro scouts have been spotted all over A-ball games lately, which is the necessary preparation to sell. But as stated in last night’s column, team brass would rather leave that prep unused and keep the team together. Every game and series carries big meaning for rest of month,” he tweeted.

Some of the players the Mets could potentially move are Max Scherzer, Starling Marte, Mark Canha, and Justin Verlander, although the latter is considered unlikely.
The whole concept of the Mets selling can be called unlikely, too, but if they get a good offer for, say, Canha, they could take it.
They are not going to trade Francisco Lindor, Kodai Senga, or Jeff McNeil, for example.
As Martino states, it will be very interesting to follow the steps the Mets decide to take in the next two weeks.
They could shape the future of the franchise.
