During his NBA playing career, superstar Magic Johnson helped shape the league into what it is today while battling it out with fellow legend Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics in the “Showtime” era of the Los Angeles Lakers.
After becoming a global icon and winning five NBA titles for the storied franchise, Johnson abruptly had to end his playing career earlier than expected after contracting the HIV virus.
He went on to become a very successful businessman, owning several companies while also being part of ownership groups of prominent franchises in MLB, the NFL, the WNBA and MLS.
Johnson made a name for himself as someone who can help turn around a sports franchise, having done so for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Sparks and Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC).
As usual, Johnson wasn’t content with his current situation and chose to expand it by trying his luck in the National Women’s Soccer League, joining the ownership group of the Washington Spirit.
With the icon now on board, the team’s official X account posted a hype video of Johnson saying he’ll be attending their next NWSL game against the Portland Thorns.
“Oh, it’s gonna be awesome! It’s gonna be off the chain!” Johnson said. “… We gonna win!”

Johnson still has the vibrant energy that made him famous playing for the Lakers and becoming a household name.
It’s safe to assume that Johnson won’t stop here with his investments in sports teams, as he could add more in the future to help keep that passion alive.
