The San Francisco 49ers have officially unveiled their plans at quarterback for the 2023 season.
They’ve publically declared Brock Purdy as the starter, Sam Darnold as the backup, and Trey Lance at QB3.
In the wake of this decision, Kyle Shanahan outlined his plans for Lance in their upcoming preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to a KNBR interview highlighted by Ari Meirov, Shanahan indicated that Lance will appear in the game after Darnold.

Shanahan also said that he allowed Lance to miss practice that day, saying, “I knew that it would be hard on him.”
With Lance poised as the third quarterback on the depth chart, playing in this preseason game could be good news for him.
Rumors of a potential trade have surfaced, as many believe Lance could receive a second chance elsewhere.
If he gets significant playing time during this contest, Lance could instill confidence in a potential trade partner should he perform well.
Lance’s career snap numbers have been a common concern, as he didn’t get much playing time in college or the NFL.
