Though Kirk Cousins has been a very productive NFL quarterback, he’s been criticized for his lack of playoff success.
Despite his 1-3 playoff record, the Atlanta Falcons signed him for four years and $180 million this past offseason, even though he was coming off a torn Achilles in his mid-30s.
He then had a frustrating 2024 season when he tied for the most interceptions in the NFL with 16 and threw a modest 18 touchdown passes, which resulted in him getting benched.
Now, one has to wonder what the immediate future holds for Cousins, especially after rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. showed some promise.
“Time will tell,” Cousins said, via Daniel Flick of Sports Illustrated. “It’s still kind of uncertain. We’ll get to March and know a lot more. I think the focus for me, really, is getting healthy.”

Bouncing back from a torn Achilles is very difficult for any athlete, but when one has 11 seasons of wear and tear as an NFL QB, the odds can be stacked against them.
Perhaps that is why the Falcons selected Penix with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, a move that caused many people to scratch their heads.
Penix threw for 4,903 yards and 36 touchdowns in his final season at the University of Washington, which made him an intriguing prospect in a draft that was full of quarterbacks.
Atlanta was 8-9 this season and missed the playoffs despite being favored to win the NFC South, but perhaps a year with a healthier Cousins will result in a postseason appearance.
