The Atlanta Falcons‘ decision to pay Kirk Cousins a lot of money seemed logical.
It would take a big offer to lure him away from the Minnesota Vikings, and the Falcons looked to be a quarterback away from contending.
However, the fact that they then selected Michael Penix Jr. with a top 10 pick in the NFL Draft shortly after signing Cousins made the decision kind of head-scratching.
Not only was Penix an older prospect, but they could’ve used that selection to bolster other areas.
Fast forward to today, and it’s clear that the Falcons are having buyer’s remorse regarding the veteran.
They didn’t build the offense around Cousins, and they benched him down the stretch last season in an attempt to make a playoff run.
Now, NFL analyst Josh Palmer is revealing that teams don’t believe Cousins will ever be the same.
“There were some people around the league that I talked to that think Kirk Cousins is essentially done,” Palmer said.
Cousins could help a quarterback-needy team.
The Cincinnati Bengals make perfect sense, as Joe Burrow might be out for the season with a toe injury, and they need someone to feed their big-time playmakers.
The Falcons reportedly asked for too much in a trade for Cousins this offseason, and accommodating his steep salary would be a problem for any team.
Penix has played well enough for the Falcons, and, barring an injury, which is always a possibility with him, he’s not going to lose his job.
So, chances are that Cousins may have already played his last NFL game.
