The New York Yankees are in free-fall mode.
After winning 99 games last season and cruising to a division title, 2023 has been a far cry from what they were able to accomplish in 2022.
Entering their series against the Washington Nationals, New York is still in last place in the American League East.
They are also four games under .500 at 60-64 and 9.5 games back in the Wild Card race, having lost eight consecutive games for the first time since 1995.
On the MLB podcast “Fair Territory,” Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic discussed what has been taking place with the Yankees and how they find themselves in a precarious position.

Rosenthal discussed GM Brian Cashman and stated that one of his greatest strengths as an executive is that he is a “survivor.”
Rosenthal believes that Cashman’s job is not on the line and that regardless of what happens to the Yankees, he’ll remain the team’s general manager.
However, the time is now for him to try and make things better, and Rosenthal thinks that will be a major key to his offseason.
The esteemed MLB writer believes owner Hal Steinbrenner will give Cashman that chance to try and improve the Yankees for 2024, but that he’ll be watched closely and held to a high standard as he tries to move forward from what has been a disappointing year for the team.
New York will have holes to fill in the offseason, and Rosenthal thinks Cashman will need to have a clear plan to make changes this winter.
