The 2023 season has been a far cry from what was expected out of the St. Louis Cardinals.
After another soul-crushing loss, they find themselves at 33-46, nine games out of first place.
With the trade deadline fast approaching, it’s anybody’s guess as to what they may decide to do.
There are obvious holes in the starting rotation and in the bullpen.
More often than not, teams either buy or sell at the trade deadline.
However, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports isn’t quite sure that this is the right way to look at things for the Cardinals, and discussed what their deadline strategy could ultimately be.

Rosenthal discussed the possibility of the Cardinals trading away Paul Goldschmidt, which is ultimately unlikely.
However, he noted that if the Cardinals were to decide to do that, it could bring in a massive haul, which led him to point out that they could ultimately buy and sell at the same time.
Again, a Goldschmidt trade is highly unlikely after President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak told reporters that he is not looking to “blow up” the team, but rather, find ways to improve the roster.
Rosenthal noted that teams often buy and sell simultaneously these days and that it’s a common strategy for teams to improve their rosters for the present and the future.
St. Louis does have a few impending free agents that could be sold off for some assets, which in turn could be used to make a trade for a starting pitcher or two.
