Having a matchup between Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander was not something we were supposed to see this year.
Both were on the New York Mets to begin the MLB season.
Yet, after a terrible season for the Mets, both were traded by the deadline.
Scherzer was traded to the Texas Rangers and Verlander was sent to the Houston Astros.
Now both are going head to head in the AL West trying to secure a playoff spot.
Scherzer and Verlander squared off on Wednesday night and Verlander got the best of his former teammate.
As shared by Chandler Rome, Verlander threw seven innings while giving up one run.
Scherzer got hammered for seven runs in three innings.
Justin Verlander: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HR
Max Scherzer: 3 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 3 HR— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) September 7, 2023
Both of these pitchers are in the twilight of their careers.
Yet, they still have something left to add to a playoff race.
Verlander was on the Astros last year before signing with the Mets this offseason.
He is comfortable pitching in Houston, and this should be the spot where he ends his career.
It will be fun to watch both the Astros and Rangers make their playoff push over the final few weeks.
The Rangers have fallen out of the playoff picture, and need to get themselves back on track.
As for the Astros, they are the defending champs and starting to play like it.
No one wants to play this team in the playoffs.
They are finally healthy and clicking on all cylinders.
The addition of Verlander could be what helps put them over the top this year.
