The Chicago Bears traded up to get Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft.
However, he saw limited playing time during his rookie season because Andy Dalton started some games.
He ended up playing 12 games and finished with 1,870 yards, seven touchdowns, and ten interceptions.
But in his sophomore season, the franchise has made him the undisputed starting quarterback.
Dalton is now with the New Orleans Saints while Nick Foles is already a free agent.
However, the Bears still need a backup quarterback and they brought in someone who wouldn’t threaten Fields’ position in the depth chart.
Free-agent QB Nathan Peterman is signing a one-year contract with the #Bears, per source.
Peterman — who opened the 2018 season as the #Bills’ starter ahead of Josh Allen — spent the last few seasons with the #Raiders. Now, he joins Justin Fields and Trevor Siemian in Chicago.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero tweeted, “Free-agent QB Nathan Peterman is signing a one-year contract with the #Bears, per source. Last season, Peterman played one game but did not have a passing attempt.
All he contributed for the Las Vegas Raiders was two rushing attempts for two yards.
The Raiders didn’t need much of his services thanks to Derek Carr‘s strong season.
Throughout five seasons, Peterman has played ten games and threw for 573 yards.
Unfortunately, he has three touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions.
Tall Order For Fields
Even if the Green Bay Packers lost Davante Adams, Fields and the Bears must still go past the reigning NFC North champions.
Meanwhile, Kevin O’Connell‘s arrival in Minnesota might unlock more possibilities with their offense.
The Detroit Lions drafted Aidan Hutchinson who could disrupt Chicago’s offensive line.
These scenarios denote that the Bears are in for a tough battle in their division.
Losing Allen Robinson II to the Los Angeles Rams might also weaken their offense, putting them at a disadvantage.
But if Fields is a deserving franchise quarterback, he will find a way to deliver the goods.
