The Minnesota Vikings just got one of their best players locked up for years to come.
They gave safety Josh Metellus a three-year contract extension to keep him around for a little longer.
He will make $36 million over three years, but the deal could reach $42 million depending on some incentives.
It also includes $25 million in guarantees.
Metellus has established himself as a crucial contributor to Brian Flores’ defense, and while he’s not trying to be full of himself, he believes he’s one of the most versatile defensive players in the game (via Ari Meirov):
“Easily. I’m not trying to be overconfident, but the track record is the track record. I haven’t seen a guy go from first down at linebacker, second down at nickel, third down at safety, and if there’s a fourth down, in the A-gap. I’m probably one of the best football players in the world,” Metellus said.

Metellus’ contract was set to expire after this season, but he claimed that he couldn’t see himself playing somewhere else.
He might be listed as a safety, but the Vikings have played him all over the field since they took him in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He’s played as many as seven different positions during a single game, making 27 starts and playing 90% of the team’s defensive snaps since Coach Flores took over as defensive coordinator in 2023.
Metellus skipped a portion of OTAs and minicamp, but he claimed that he never intended to leave or hold out if he didn’t get a deal.
The Vikings have now spent big bucks on their roster, and this core of players should stay together during J.J. McCarthy‘s rookie contract.
And while some have doubts about their ability to compete in 2025 with a first-year quarterback behind center, they have one of the most stacked rosters in all of football right now.
