Josh McDaniels made his name in the NFL as the long-time offensive coordinator under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots and later in a short tenure as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, but he is out of a job for 2024 and has plenty of time to watch and talk about football alongside the rest of us.
In a recent media appearance, McDaniels revealed his thoughts on New England’s new franchise quarterback, rookie No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye out of North Carolina.
McDaniels stopped by Julian Edelman’s Games With Names podcast and when Edelman asked him about Maye, McDaniels said “I don’t know where he’ll fit in the whole…the style he’ll play with, I’m interested to see how that develops. Is he gonna be a little bit of a runner like Josh Allen was in Buffalo, guys like that that have those kind of attributes, you can use them to run the ball too.”

McDaniels also credited Maye for already being capable of stepping up in the pocket, which is something young quarterbacks don’t always grasp at a young age, but he noted how big and athletic the rookie is and how the Pats have a lot of options due to his talent level.
Maye isn’t going to start right away even though head coach Jerod Mayo noted that he outplayed starter Jacoby Brissett in preseason, and part of the reason why Maye is beginning on the bench could be due to the team’s poor offensive line that isn’t built to protect the team’s biggest investment just yet.
It’s possible we’ll see Maye at some point this year, but for now, he’ll just have to keep sharpening his tools in practice.
