An NBA player won’t go far unless they have a good relationship with their head coach.
Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors admits that he might not be best friends with Steve Kerr but they are in “good shape.”
Speaking to Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, Kuminga opened up about where things stand between them.
“Me and him — this is one thing I learned growing up, I feel like you wouldn’t fight with anybody if you don’t like them,” Kuminga said. “I feel like me and Steve’s relationship is good. ”
“Good” is definitely better than how things were.
There were reports of Kuminga and Kerr butting heads at the start of last season, with the 21-year-old star wanting more chances to help the team out and Kerr reluctant to put him in the starting lineup consistently.
This led to a sit-down chat between the two in Kerr’s office, where they seemingly hashed things out.
That worked out well because Kuminga got more time on the court and played better for the Warriors.
The season ended with Kuminga averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, the strongest numbers of his career.
Kuminga admitted that Kerr pushes him hard and demands a lot from him, but he thinks that’s all for the best.
Still, people wonder how much they’ll see of Kuminga in 2024-25.
Although he has shown some tremendous growth, it’s not certain that he’ll be a starter all year long.
It’s also not certain if he will receive a big contract extension from the Warriors.
There are many questions about Kuminga and the Warriors but at least fans can rest assured that he and Kerr are getting along.
