The NFL community was shocked to hear that Derek Carr announced his retirement from the NFL.
Carr was in the middle of working his way through recovery to try and get back on the football field, but after reports of him needing another surgery to repair the damage, he decided to call it a career.
At this point in his life, another surgery might not have worked as well as he would have liked, so this is the end of his time in the NFL.
Carr’s career certainly had some ups and downs, both with the Saints and with the Las Vegas Raiders, but he was generally well-liked among his peers and by coaches.
He received a lot of heartfelt notes on social media from former teammates and coaches, and Jon Gruden added to them on X.
Gruden congratulated Carr on his career, noting his “mental toughness and preparation” as two of his greatest attributes.
Congratulations on a great career. You showcased incredible mental toughness and preparation for over a decade. I love you and enjoyed our time. Keep shredding! @derekcarrqb https://t.co/CJyG5l7SzI

Carr and Gruden worked together for the Raiders from 2018 to 2021, when Gruden left the team, and it seems like they built a strong relationship during that time.
He might not have been an All-Pro throughout his career, and he isn’t talked about as a Hall of Fame quarterback, but Carr will certainly be missed.
He brought a lot of joy to the Raiders fanbase when they didn’t have a lot of hope as an organization, something he can hang his hat on now that he’s retired.
Carr hasn’t announced what’s next on his professional journey, but fans will be excited to hear about any of his upcoming ventures.
