JJ Redick becoming the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers felt like it was set in stone months before it happened given his ties to LeBron James, but it’s still surreal to see it become a reality since he was just in the booth at the end of the NBA season calling games alongside Doris Burke and company.
In a recent Summer League game against the Houston Rockets, JJ jumped back on the announcer’s table with his old buddies and shed some light on his desire to become a coach.
When asked about why he felt a calling to coach in the NBA, Redick quipped “part of that is that I’m just a sicko.”

You’ve got to love the honesty, and sometimes a sicko is exactly what you need to run your team.
The Lakers could use some stability at the head coaching position after cycling through Darvin Ham, Frank Vogel, Luke Walton, Byron Scott, and Mike D’Antoni in the past decade.
The rumor was that the Lakers were looking for someone young and energetic who could be their own version of an Erik Spoelstra or Joe Mazzulla type of hire, and Redick would certainly fit that mold as a young and passionate hire who can relate to his players without sacrificing anything in terms of basketball acumen.
It’s crazy to land the job as the head coach of the Lakers with no previous coaching experience, but perhaps that will allow Redick to be more flexible and collaborative.
