The Los Angeles Chargers are off to an impressive 2-0 start after handling the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders, and they’re starting to draw some national attention as one of the up-and-coming contenders in the AFC.
A big reason why the Chargers have gotten off to a strong start has been the impactful presence of safety Derwin James, who has 14 tackles and a couple of pass deflections so far while being a consistent menace as an anchor for this team’s secondary.
No one has been more impressed with James than his head coach, as Jim Harbaugh had high praise for him during Wednesday’s media session.
“I’ve called him the best safety I’ve ever seen in the history of the National Football League. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb there.”

Harbaugh added that when he puts on the armor and his No. 3, he’s a Superman out there, which is about as strong an endorsement as a player can hope for from their coach.
James was a big part of Los Angeles’ turnaround last season as he adapted swimmingly to Harbaugh’s new regime and helped lead the Chargers to the playoffs in Harbaugh’s first season at the helm.
James and the Chargers have a tough Week 3 matchup with a familiar AFC West foe as they welcome the Denver Broncos to town, and LA will be aiming to build off last year’s season sweep of Denver to move to 3-0 and maintain sole possession of first place in the division.
