The New York Jets will take an interesting approach to their offense this season.
Despite having a legitimate workhorse running back in Breece Hall, head coach Aaron Glenn has hinted at using a three-man committee.
Hall should be atop the running back depth chart nonetheless, with Braelon Allen right behind him.
However, Allen wants that to change.
Asked about his mindset for this season, the second-year pro claimed to have a huge chip on his shoulder.
He wants to prove that he has what it takes to be a star, not only to everybody else, but to his teammates.
“I felt like I was the best running back in that (2024) draft, and I still do. I have a lot left to prove, not even to the outside world but still people in this locker room and people in this building and to myself. Last year, I kind of gotta flush it, forget about it, but that still drives me,” Allen said.
The fourth-round pick showed some explosive play in his rookie season.
He had a more prominent role on offense as the season went by, taking touches from Hall in the second half of the campaign.
The Jets will have to turn to a run-heavy approach now more than ever.
Quarterback Justin Fields’ limitations as a passer were evident in training camp, and the best way to put him in a position to succeed will be to have a well-established ground attack.
Fields is strong, shifty and athletic, and he’s a threat to take off with the ball.
That’s why, with a three-man running back rotation that includes Isaiah Davis, there may not be enough touches for everybody.
With Hall in a contract season, and Davis looking to make an impact, Allen will have to put in a lot of work to live up to his expectations.
