The New York Jets have a talented roster, but after going 5-12 this season, they have lots of work to do if they are to be, at the very least, a playoff team next season.
Their first item of business is hiring a head coach after they fired Robert Saleh during the season, and interviews have been taking place in recent days.
The search reportedly includes one unexpected candidate.
“The Jets have completed a HC interview with Maryland coach Mike Locksley. This one came out of the blue. Locksley is 32-36 at Maryland, including 3-0 in bowls,” Rich Cimini of ESPN wrote on X.

Locksley has been the head coach at Maryland since the 2019 season after many years as an assistant in many capacities at various schools, and although he hasn’t had a lot of success with the Terrapins, the program did win three straight bowl games.
He played defensive back at Towson State University (now Towson University) becoming defensive backs coach and special teams coach for the school in 1992.
The Jets haven’t made the playoffs since the 2010 season, giving them the NFL’s longest active playoff drought, and with quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future looking very murky, getting back to the postseason won’t be easy.
