The New England Patriots are coming off a 16-10 upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week One on the road.
Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who was named the starter over rookie Drake Maye after the preseason, played well and didn’t turn the ball over (completed 15 of 24 passes for 121 yards, seven rushes for 32 yards).
While Brissett is preparing to lead the Pats into their Week Two matchup against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, a development plan has been revealed for Maye, who is presumably the future of the franchise.
According to head coach Jerod Mayo (via insider Mike Reiss), Drake Maye is getting 30% of the first-team reps in practice.
Jerod Mayo says Drake Maye is getting 30% of the reps with the top offense in practice, which is part of the development plan.
This was first mentioned on the CBS broadcast of the Patriots-Bengals opener, and Mayo details this morning how Jacoby Brissett has been a true pro.

Again, that is part of the development plan for Maye and has nothing to do with Brissett’s play in the first game of the regular season.
It is clear that New England believes they can win games with Brissett and have already done just that.
But unless the Patriots are playoff contenders once the weather turns, it feels as though they are setting the stage for Maye to take over at some point in time.
The former ACC Player of the Year and No. 3 overall draft pick out of North Carolina has all the talent and size to be a great player.
But, it will all come down to how he practices and learns from a veteran like Brissett, who has been around the block.
Time will certainly if and when Maye can take over as the team’s long-term starter later on this season.
