Few people expected the New England Patriots to be a competitive team this season.
They simply didn’t have the talent to do so, at least on offense.
Also, no one knew what to expect from Jerod Mayo in his first year in charge of the team.
So far, the early returns haven’t been encouraging at all.
Not only has his decision-making and clock management left much to be desired, but some of his comments have also made the headlines.
That happened again after their loss to the Arizona Cardinals when he seemingly threw offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt under the bus.
Following the game, one reporter asked Mayo if he had thought of using rookie QB Drake Maye to get one yard near the Cardinals’ goal line, as Maye had already proven that he was more than capable of using his legs when need be.
Instead of giving a straightforward answer, he claimed, “You said it, I didn’t” (via Savage Sports).

The said play came on third-and-1 and fourth-and-1 at the Cardinals’ four-yard line.
Neither Rhamondre Stevenson nor Antonio Gibson could get that yard, resulting in a turnover on downs.
On the surface, Mayo seemed to blame Van Pelt for the play-calling.
Once again, Mayo has put himself in a tough position by saying something he probably shouldn’t have, even if he truly believed that.
One would guess that he would’ve learned from his previous miscues by now, so perhaps that’s just who he is.
