The St. Louis Cardinals started off their Wednesday game against the San Francisco Giants on the right foot.
They took a 5-2 lead to the seventh inning after Jordan Montgomery, their pitcher for the day, hurled a quality start.
Things started to collapse at that point, though.
The Giants scored one in the seventh and two in the ninth frame to tie the game at five; and then crossed home plate three more times in the tenth to earn a comeback 8-5 victory.
It was another embarrassing display by the Cardinals, as the bullpen crumbled in high-leverage spots.
Their offense was incapable of getting anything going beyond the third inning.
MLB insider Jeff Passan blasted the team on Wednesday afternoon after the result of the game was confirmed.
“As mediocre as the Mets and Padres have been this season, no team comes close to the St. Louis Cardinals in terms of downright disappointment. They are a disaster. Five straight losses. A 27-42 record — the worst in the National League, better than only Oakland and Kansas City,” he tweeted.

He is right: no team in the NL Central had better odds of winning the division than the Cardinals.
That was before the start of the season.
Once the action started, things started to fall apart and they are now last, not only in the Central, but in the National League as a whole.
It has been a complete nightmare for a team with playoffs aspirations.
Even the Colorado Rockies, Washington Nationals, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago White Sox have a better record than the Cards.
That tells you everything you need to know about their year.
