Boston Celtics fans walked away disappointed and confused by their team on Monday night.
Not only were they sad to see the Celtics lose to the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, but they were confounded by Boston’s insistence on shooting three-pointers.
Those shots just were not landing for Boston throughout the night, but they did not stop.
Following their 108-105 loss, Jaylen Brown opened up to ESPN about his thoughts on their three-point attempts.
“Some of ’em felt good, some of ’em felt like we maybe forced the issue,” said Celtics star Jaylen Brown, who was 1-of-10 on 3s. “Definitely our rhythm and our timing was a little bit off. We got a lot of great looks, but it may be some truth [to shooting too many] today.”
The Celtics missed a record 45 three-pointers during the game, and the Knicks took full advantage of that.
Even as shot after shot didn’t land, head coach Joe Mazzulla kept with his game plan and didn’t deviate from hoisting shots from beyond the arc.
It was a surprising move and a painful one for fans because the Celtics held a 20-point lead, and it seemed like victory was theirs.
But they allowed the Knicks to get back in the game and eventually fell, losing home-court advantage.
Going 15-of-60 from the three-point line does not look good, and now people are wondering what Game 2 will look like.
The Celtics have relied on their three-point shooting for more than a season, and it usually pays off.
What will they do now that they have had a really bad night, and it cost them dearly?
If Game 2 starts with a flurry of missed shots, you can expect to hear fans in TD Garden complain loudly.
