The Cleveland Cavaliers are clearly a better team with Donovan Mitchell on the roster.
Although they didn’t make it as far in the postseason as they had hoped, the Cavs are now one of the most exciting up-and-coming teams in the East and Mitchell is one of their biggest stars.
Therefore, many fans hope the team re-signs Mitchell to a new deal immediately.
But that might not happen any time soon.
Brian Windhorst reported, via NBACentral on Twitter, that the possibility of Mitchell committing to a contract extension soon isn’t large.
“I don’t think under any circumstances he was ever considering extending this season, and I think the Cavs knew that when they traded for him,” Windhorst said.
Windhorst then added that the “pressure point” will come a year from now when Mitchell has just one year left on his contract.

Mitchell currently has two full seasons remaining on his deal, after which he has a player option before the 2025-26 season.
That means that he has plenty of time to decide what he will do.
It also means he has plenty of time to drum up more enthusiasm from Cleveland’s front office and, therefore, a bigger salary too.
The Cavaliers want Mitchell for as long as they can have him.
But they also know how this business is run and expect Mitchell to move slowly to re-sign.
None of this means that Cavs fans should panic and think that he is headed to the exit.
There is still a very good chance he eventually agrees to another deal with his new team.
Just because Mitchell isn’t leaping at the chance to do that now doesn’t spell a troubled future.
It just means he is smart about his business deals.
