Earlier this season, the Atlanta Falcons looked like the best team in the NFC South.
Adding quarterback Kirk Cousins was paying off, and the divisional title looked to be theirs to lose after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost key players to injury.
However, the Falcons haven’t looked as good lately, and a lot of that has to do with Cousins.
The veteran has struggled with his reads, putting the ball at risk or holding on to it too long, and failing to make the most of the young talent he has at his disposal.
However, as much as some analysts are calling for rookie Michael Penix Jr. to take over as the starter, it seems like head coach Raheem Morris isn’t ready to make the change.
“Despite recent struggles, Falcons head coach Raheem Morris has been clear: He’s standing by Kirk Cousins,” insider Dianna Russini wrote for The Athletic.
The Falcons’ decision to select Penix with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after spending a ton of money to sign Cousins as a free agent was met with doubts and skepticism.
Penix was one of the best quarterbacks in college football last season, and he made a case for having the best arm in this year’s star-studded draft class.
In limited preseason action, he looked like a legitimate NFL quarterback.
Even with Penix as an option, the Falcons continue to believe that this is nothing but a slump and that Cousins still gives them the best chance to compete for the division and, more importantly, the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
