Before the 2024 NFL regular season began, the Dallas Cowboys made star quarterback Dak Prescott the highest-paid player in the league after months of speculation about the team’s intentions with the veteran.
With Prescott getting the lucrative long-term contract extension he was looking for, the quarterback market has been reset again, and all eyes will be on San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy, who could be next in line for a massive deal in the near future.
Purdy had an unorthodox rise to stardom in the NFL and is still trying to prove doubters wrong, but he has convinced head coach Kyle Shanahan that he’s the right man for the job in San Francisco for the foreseeable future, which means he’ll almost certainly be the next player to reset the market for the most important position on the field.
With Purdy keeping the 49ers as a Super Bowl contender, even though they are coming off a surprising and disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, San Francisco will likely have to open the checkbook and pay him what he’s worth.
Niners insider Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle recently speculated on what that deal for Purdy might be worth.
“I think if Brock Purdy doesn’t walk in this offseason and demand $60 [million] per year, that means he’s had a subpar season. … I think [the 49ers] are hoping that he proves that he’s a $60 [million] QB,” Ostler said, via 95.7 The Game.

It’ll be interesting to see if Purdy can live up to expectations from here on out and prove that he’s worth paying that kind of money.
The 49ers are considered a leading contender in the NFC but are dealing with the absence of running back Christian McCaffrey and wideout Deebo Samuel, which will make it hard for Purdy to be as productive as he’d like unless others on the offense step up.
